We’re putting down roots…
2024 Newsletter - Part B
Somewhere over the rainbow
On a little plot in central Maui, we cleared rocks and weeds and mowed down the prolific six-foot sorghum grass and worked it into the soil.
We formed raised beds in neat rows and configured an irrigation system of headers, pressure regulators, shut-off valves, and drip lines.
We made a crop plan, timing a harvest window for early 2025. And so we planted thousands of seeds in trays and fostered their growth in the nursery.
The seeds began to sprout

The soil gave life
We planted thousands more seeds directly into the ground and transplanted our seedlings from trays.
As the seeds grew so did our knowledge. We expanded our reading and each week we attended lectures from some of Hawaii’s finest agricultural scholars.
We worked long days in the field, often arriving before sunrise or working till sunset.
And food began to grow

It wasn’t always easy
Some days it felt like we were inching along as slow as this hungry hungry caterpillar.
Pests are, by definition, pestilent. We’re still learning how to identify and deal with them. It can be discouraging to feel outwitted by a bug.
We turned weeding into a meditation, practicing good posture and breath, as we pulled pounds upon pounds of invasive plants. Our backs are getting stronger.
And now the harvest has begun

We have more than we can eat!

This is just the beginning
There seems to be an infinite amount of things one can learn when watching plants grow.
We intend to continue learning and growing.
Sending you Aloha
Goodbye for now.
We’ll post another update soon enough.
Meanwhile, can you guess what we have in most common with a cow?
You’ll often find us both out standing in our fields.
